James Duckett was pronounced dead at 1:19 p.m. Dominick Occhicone - 80 years old, the oldest person ever executed in Florida's history - was pronounced dead at 6:13 p.m. His last words: "I know it don't mean much, but I'm sorry. I never meant to do what I did." The Church's position has not changed. On Wednesday, the judge who sentenced the Apalachee High School shooter - a 16-year-old who murdered two students and two teachers in a carefully planned attack - found "permanent incorrigibility" and gave him life without parole. The same outcome the bishops had asked for in Florida. One case ended in execution, one in life without parole. The Church has a consistent position on both.

None of this is easy.

Blessed Solanus Casey - the Capuchin doorkeeper of Detroit whose feast falls today - answered the door of his monastery for fifty years, saying very little, listening much, and recording in his notebooks thousands of healings and answered prayers. He was considered too limited for preaching. He shone like the sun at a monastery door.

Ask at dinner: "One saint shaped people with words. One shaped people with silence and presence. Which kind of witness does our family tend more toward - and which do we need more of?"
