John's Gospel gives us the quieter version of the same curtain pulled back: Jesus tells Nathanael, "You shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." Today the Church honors the three archangels named in Scripture: Michael the warrior, Gabriel the messenger, Raphael the healer. All three show up exactly where you'd expect angels least - a battlefield, a poor family's kitchen, a young man's ordinary journey.

1. A School Reopens in Gaza: "A Light in the Darkness"

Holy Family School, attached to Gaza's only Catholic parish, reopened September 15 for about 1,000 students after nearly three years closed. Most of the students are Muslim; roughly 130 are Christian, and for the first time every Christian child left in Gaza is studying under one roof. Father Gabriel Romanelli, the parish priest, told a visiting delegation from Aid to the Church in Need that reopening felt "like a light in the darkness for the local community that has experienced so much suffering." Bishop William Shomali called it a sign that "hope is stronger than fear." The school now offers counseling alongside classes, and children have been asking Father Romanelli to keep it open after hours too - they told him they have nowhere else to go.

2. Pope Leo Closes His France Trip: "Guard Against the Illusion That Rearmament Is the Answer"

On the last day of his four-day visit to France, Pope Leo XIV spoke Monday in Metz at an interreligious gathering built around Robert Schuman, the Catholic statesman who helped found the European Union. Without naming Ukraine directly, Leo said "war has returned, even to Europe: a new senseless slaughter, claiming countless civilian lives every day," and warned Europe against believing that rearmament alone can secure peace. "Today we must ask whether we are truly making 'creative efforts' to advance world peace," he said, "or whether we are simply seeking to 'stem the tide of war' and better prepare ourselves for wars that we assume are still to come." He also warned that invoking God's name to justify violence "is to profane that name."

Former President Joe Biden accepted an award from Planned Parenthood last week and praised his administration's response to the Dobbs decision. CatholicVote President Kelsey Reinhardt posted on X: "I am begging Catholic bishops to stand against this public scandal for the good of the soul of Joe Biden, battling cancer, and for the spiritual health of our nation."

Faith Lens for the Home: Gabriel delivered news that asked something enormous of Mary before she could say yes to it. Ask your family: "When someone we respect does something we believe is seriously wrong, what does it look like to say so honestly without giving up on them?" Pray for Joe Biden, who is battling cancer, and for the bishops weighing how to respond.

Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels - September 29

Three angels named directly in Scripture, honored together since the Church merged their separate feast days after the 1969 calendar reform. Michael leads God's armies against the dragon in Revelation and is invoked as protector of the Church. Gabriel appears to Daniel, to Zechariah, and to Mary at the Annunciation - always as the one who explains what God is doing. Raphael, whose name means "God heals," guides Tobias safely on his journey in the Book of Tobit and restores his father's sight. Together they cover what most families actually need in a hard season: protection, a clear word, and healing.

Ask at dinner: "If you could ask one of the three archangels for help this week, which one would you ask, and why?"
