When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. - John 19:26-27
Reflection
She was there. The disciples scattered. Peter denied. Judas was already gone. And Mary was standing at the foot of the cross, with the Beloved Disciple. Jesus, dying, looks down and makes one last practical arrangement: his mother will not be without a son; the disciple will not be without a mother. The dying act of care is mutual provision.
The Lord told the serpent in the garden: enmity between you and the woman. The ancient enmity runs from Genesis to Golgotha. The woman's offspring strikes the serpent's head from the cross. And the woman who was there at the beginning is there at the ending, standing at the source of the blood and water that flow from the opened side.
Brother, she took your brothers into her home from the hour of the cross. She is not a distant intercessor. She is the mother in the house - present, attentive, bringing things to her Son. The Rosary is not a pious exercise. It is the concrete act of taking her into your home and letting her pray with you.
The Challenge
From that hour the disciple took her into his own home. This week, pray one decade of the Rosary each day - five days, five mysteries, five conversations with the woman who was at the foot of the cross. Bring one specific intention each day. She will bring it to Jesus.
One Prayer
Our Lady, Mother of the Church, you stood at the foot of the cross when others ran. Pray for us - for our brothers in this band, for the work given to us, for the people we are responsible for. Bring it all to Jesus. Amen.
